Welcome to my website. I am an Associate Professor in Bioinformatics at Northumbria University. I stream R programming and Bioinformatics lectures on Twitch and YouTube. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne together with my girlfriend Anna and our cat Oscar. Anna loves Oscar, Cacti, food, and me ♥, see her insta! Oscar doesn't believe in social media.

Before working at Northumbria university I was a PostDoc at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HU-Berlin), before that I lived in Groningen and worked for the University of Groningen. There, I obtained my PhD in bioinformatics on the 17th of November 2014. I worked there at the Groningen Bioinformatics Centre (GBIC), part of the University. During my PhD I worked part-time for the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) at the Genomics Coordination Centre (GCC). This website is to showcase what I do for work, and keep a blog about my work and personal life.

I develop new methodologies and create (open source) software for use in (systems) biology research, like the addition of Multiple QTL Mapping (MQM) into R/qtl . The focus of my PhD thesis was computational methods in quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis, and integration of big data sets in a useful / comprehensive manner. This web site is broader than just work. I also have some pages dedicated to my passion for software visualization, games, movies, music, and you can look at photos of Oscar.
